Emergency Medicine Residency

The St. Barnabas Emergency Medicine Residency Program is an AOA accredited program.  Affiliated with the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, the St. Barnabas Hospital Emergency Medicine Residency Program is designed to provide the emergency medicine resident with the skills, knowledge, and experience required to become an outstanding and complete emergency physician. Accredited in 1990, and beginning with one resident, the emergency medicine residency program now trains over 65 residents in its various programs.  The residency program, based at St. Barnabas Hospital, is now a 97,000 visit full service emergency department, accounting for some 70% of the admissions to the 460 hospital beds.

The program accepts 17 Residents per year in all of the its programs which include – 13 EM residents, 2 EM/FP residents and 2 EM/IM residents. Applications must be made through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). If you are interested in a PGY II or above position, please contact the program director.


Emergency Medicine Applicant Criteria

  • Successful Completion of Comlex 1 – with the understanding that Comlex 2 must be passed prior to starting your OGME-1 year
    • Scores will be considered along with all other application requirements- including class rank, letters of recommendation, motivation for learning, personal statement, and the interview itself.
  • Required Documents:
    • 3 letters of recommendation – one from an emergency physician
    • Transcripts
    • Deans letter
    • Photo
    • CV
  • While not a requirement for selection to the residency we do encourage all potential residents to rotate in the department.  This allows the program to get to know the candidate and more importantly the candidate to get to know the program.
  • Applications are first reviewed in August with a deadline is December 1st.

Interview Dates

Applicants are interviewed every Wednesday from the beginning of September to end of December. Consideration is made for those applicants that cannot interview on a given Wednesday.
